From the Square to the Subdivisions

Excavation contractors in Medina work in the Medina County seat, about 33 miles south of Cleveland and 23 miles west of Akron. Medina became the county seat in 1835 and a city in 1952. Its population climbed from 8,235 in 1960 to 25,139 in 2000, and the 2020 census counted 26,094 residents and 11,333 housing units on about 11.8 square miles at an elevation of about 1,066 feet.

A rebuilt historic core

A fire in 1870 destroyed 45 buildings and nearly wiped out the town. Much of the square was rebuilt afterward, which is why so many of its buildings share a Victorian style. The historic district now covers nine blocks around Uptown Park. Older homes near the center can have stone foundations and old laterals.

Growth from the 1960s on

Most of Medina's homes went up in the four decades after 1960. Those neighborhoods now need lateral repairs, driveway base rebuilds and regrading around settled foundations.

Clay uplands

Medina sits on upland till with clay subsoil. Water perches near the surface in spring, so drains and grade matter even on higher ground.

Downtown versus the edges

Near the square, lots are smaller, homes are older and access is tight, so we bring compact equipment and plan around parking and sidewalks. Toward the edges of the city, newer subdivisions and larger lots allow full-size machines and on-site reuse of soil. Medina is also served by several state routes, including U.S. 42 and State Routes 3, 18 and 57, which matter for truck routing to and from disposal sites.

Typical Medina jobs

  • Sewer lateral trenches
  • Footings for additions and garages
  • French drains and regrading
  • Garage and outbuilding teardowns
