When Water Has Nowhere to Soak In
French drain systems are trenches lined with fabric, filled with clean stone and fitted with perforated pipe that collects water and carries it downhill to an outlet. Around Cleveland they are one of the most requested drainage fixes, and the soil is the reason. Dense glacial clay with a perched water table means rain sits on top of the subsoil instead of sinking in, so yards stay soggy for days and water presses against basement walls.
Reading the soil
The USDA describes the Mahoning soil series, common across Northeast Ohio, as somewhat poorly drained with a perched water table 6 to 12 inches below the surface from October through June. The Ellsworth series has perched water 11 to 24 inches down from November to May. That is the zone a shallow French drain works in: it intercepts the water riding on top of the clay and gives it a fast path out.
Types of drains we install
A curtain drain runs across a slope to catch water coming from uphill before it reaches the house. A yard drain runs through a low area that ponds. A footing drain sits alongside the foundation at footing depth, often during exterior waterproofing. Downspout lines carry roof water underground to the same outlet. HomeGuide lists exterior French drains at $10 to $35 per linear foot, $1,000 to $3,500 for 100 feet, and curtain drains at $1,500 to $8,800.
The outlet is everything
A drain is only as good as where it ends. Options include daylighting to a lower part of the lot, a pop-up emitter, a dry well, or a connection the city allows. In tight clay, dry wells drain slowly, so we size them carefully or recommend another outlet. Where a city restricts tying into storm sewers, we confirm what is allowed before design. The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, founded in 1972, runs a regional stormwater program, and member cities have their own rules on discharges.
Building it to last
We use filter fabric to keep clay fines out of the stone, keep a steady fall in the pipe, and add cleanouts so the line can be flushed. Trenches are backfilled with stone to near the surface, then topsoil or decorative stone. Drains are also often paired with regrading, because fixing the surface slope reduces how much water the pipe has to carry.

How It Works
1. Find the water
We watch where water collects, where it comes from and where it can go.
2. Design the route
Pipe path, depth, fall and outlet are laid out and written into the estimate.
3. Dig and build
Trench, fabric, stone and pipe installed at a steady slope.
4. Close and test
Backfill, surface restoration and a water test through the cleanout.

French Drain Systems Questions
Will a French drain fix my wet basement?
An exterior drain can help when water comes from saturated soil or runoff against the wall. Leaks through cracks or rising groundwater under the floor may need interior drainage or waterproofing as well. We tell you which problem we see.
How deep is a yard French drain?
Most yard and curtain drains are roughly 18 to 24 inches deep, enough to catch water perched on the clay. Footing drains go down to the footing.
Where can the water go?
To a lower part of your lot, a pop-up emitter, a dry well, or a connection your city permits. We check the rules before design.
Do French drains clog in clay?
They can if built without filter fabric or with dirty stone. We wrap the trench in fabric, use clean stone and add cleanouts so the pipe can be flushed.
