Reaching a Broken House Sewer

Sewer lateral excavation is the digging needed to reach the private pipe that carries waste from your house to the public sewer. When a camera shows a collapse, a belly, a separated joint or roots packed into old clay tile, the fix often starts with a trench or a pit over the bad section. We dig, support and dewater the excavation, work with your plumber or do the trench work for the repair, then backfill and restore the surface.

Old pipe in a lake-effect climate

Many Cleveland-area homes were built in waves: Cleveland's population peaked at 914,808 in 1950, and suburbs like Parma, Euclid and Garfield Heights added tens of thousands of residents in the 1950s and 1960s. Sewer laterals laid in those decades are often vitrified clay or early pipe that has had 60 or more years of roots, settlement and freeze-thaw. Clay till that swells when wet and shrinks when dry keeps working on joints.

Locating before digging

A camera inspection and a locator tell us where the problem is and how deep. Ohio law then requires at least two working days' notice to the utility protection service before excavation, and utilities mark gas, water, electric and communication lines in the dig area. Sewer laterals cross under many of those, so careful hand digging near marks is part of the job.

Trench or trenchless

Open trenching is the most direct repair when the pipe is shallow, the yard is open, or the line has a sag that needs to be regraded. Trenchless methods like pipe bursting still need excavated pits at each end. HomeAdvisor lists sewer line replacement at $60 to $250 per linear foot and trenching at $4 to $12 per linear foot. We tell you which approach makes sense for your line and what restoration it will need.

Water and wet clay

Sewer trenches in clay collect groundwater. We pump as needed, bed the new pipe in stone so it holds grade, and backfill in compacted layers. Trenches over five feet deep get sloping or shoring under OSHA rules.

Street and sidewalk work

When the repair reaches under a sidewalk, tree lawn or street, cities usually require a permit and specific restoration. Rules vary by city across Cuyahoga County, so we check what applies to your address before we quote.

Sewer Lateral Excavation Questions

How do I know if my sewer lateral needs digging up?

Repeated backups, slow drains throughout the house, or a camera inspection that shows a collapse, offset joint or heavy roots are the usual signs. A camera tells you whether a dig is needed and where.

Is the line under the sidewalk my responsibility?

It depends on the city and the utility. Many communities make the owner responsible for the lateral up to the main, but the rules vary across Cuyahoga County, so we confirm for your address.

Can you avoid tearing up my driveway?

Sometimes. Trenchless methods need only pits at each end, and we can route a trench around hardscape where the pipe allows. If concrete has to be cut, removal and replacement is priced up front.

How long is the yard torn up?

Most residential lateral digs are open for a day or two. The trench is backfilled and graded right away, and grass returns once seed takes.
