From Dover Village to Crocker Park

Excavation contractors in Westlake work in a west-side suburb about 12 miles from downtown Cleveland. The area was Dover Village until 1940, when it was renamed to avoid confusion with Dover in Tuscarawas County, and it became a city in 1957. Population rose in every census, from 1,754 in 1920 to 12,906 in 1960 and 34,228 in 2020. The 2020 census counted 15,508 housing units on about 15.9 square miles at an elevation of about 709 feet.

Mixed housing ages

Westlake's long, steady growth left neighborhoods from every decade: older homes near the historic center, 1960s ranches, and large subdivisions from the 1980s and 1990s, when population jumped 38.7 percent in ten years. Each era has its own issues, from aging clay laterals to builder grading that has settled toward foundations.

Flat, slow-draining yards

Like much of the west side, Westlake sits on fairly flat ground with clay subsoil. Yards that hold water after every rain are the most common complaint. Regrading, swales and French drains to a workable outlet are the usual fixes.

Growth around Crocker Park

Crocker Park, a mixed-use center with about 1,050,000 square feet of retail and 650 residential units, anchors newer development. Infill and rebuild projects nearby mean demolition, pad prep and utility trenching on tight schedules.

Westlake Questions

Why does my Westlake yard stay wet for days?

Flat ground over clay subsoil gives water nowhere to go. Regrading to create fall and a drain to a proper outlet usually solves it.

Do you do infill and rebuild work?

Yes. We handle demolition, utility trenches and pad prep for rebuild projects.

Can you dig a pool in an older Westlake yard?

Usually. We check access, utilities and where spoil can go, then excavate to plan.
